The Angelic Guide for Halo Highlights

Featured Hair Trends
Nov 24, 2022

Forget about dramatic overhauls because there’s one colouring technique that will leave your locks looking angelic. Halo highlights are praised as summer’s hottest hair trend and they promise a multi-tonal glory that’s worthy of a goddess.

As the name suggests, halo highlights brighten up your hair and give a face-framing spotlight with multi-dimensional colour, just like you would expect a halo to do! The ring of light adds dimension, volume and lift. Plus, these ethereal threads of colour means you no longer have to fuss over the never-ending blonde or brunette dilemma. Ready to get the highlights from heaven for your next hair appointment? Let’s find out!

What are Halo Highlights?

This celestial colouring technique may sound too good to be true, but it’s actually quite simple. Your stylist will work with the shape and style of your hair by combining darker and lighter tones together – focusing on brighter sections at the top, where the light of a halo would fall.

In a nutshell, halo highlights delicately blend colours through the top layers of your hair to lighten the tone and leave the rest of your hair looking natural or darker. The technique is also referred to as face-framing highlights or “contouring” (just like with makeup), because the delicately placed highlights are designed to alter light reflections around your face for an overall praise-worthy effect.

How are they Different to the Money-Piece?

Just like the traditional money piece trend, halo highlights are concentrated around the face. However, the difference is they are more subtle. The money-piece hair trend focuses on a bold, high contrast look by applying to a few distinct sections. Halo highlights are different in this regard because of their diffuse nature and harmonious blending technique. Plus, halo highlights are traditionally a few shades lighter than your natural or base colour, giving you that lived-in healthy glow.

How to Get the Look?

This subtle, heavenly glow up is easy to achieve on any hair colour or hair type and offers a low-maintenance solution for those with damaged hair. Whether you love maintaining shadow roots or opt for regular toners, these halo highlights are the perfect add-on that creates a statement without the upkeep.

To get the colour right, show your stylist a photo reference of what you’re dreaming of for your hair. From there, your stylist can achieve halo highlights through either balayage or foil techniques to subtly brighten up sections around your face. For best results, we recommend highlighting within four shades of your base colour to achieve the most divine look. If you go for a stronger contrast, then the regrowth will be more noticeable. When blended and toned properly, the root colour is so soft and the look is blessed with low maintenance.

Caring for Halo Highlights at Home

You may be thinking these halo highlights are the answer to your prayers! As if this look couldn’t get any better? They are super easy to upkeep, and they look divine in an updo or worn down. Your hair will grow out seamlessly because the highlighted sections are blended with your natural or base colour.

Anytime you apply colour to your hair you should have a home hair care routine to maintain its health. Keeping coloured hair healthy means hydrating it, not over-washing it, and nourishing your strands with the right treatments.

We absolutely love Oribe’s Bright Blonde Radiance and Repair Treatment! Your halo will shine brighter than ever with this restorative silkening treatment because it is specifically formulated for blonde hair and highlights. The treatment repairs and prevents damage, brittleness and split ends, leaving hair ultra-soft while violet pigments keep brassiness at bay. Grab yours at Epic Hair Designs!
