If you’re reading this, you’re probably lucky enough to have a home, a shower, food in the fridge and some spare cash to treat yourself once in awhile. Inner Brisbane has around 2000 homeless people who aren’t lucky enough to drive home to a warm bed each night. It’s easy to forget how privileged we are, taking things like a warm shower for granted until the water gets cut off or turning on a light at night until there’s no electricity.
Orange Sky was created by Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett to help tackle homelessness in Brisbane and has rapidly spread nationwide. The two Brisbane boys were honoured as Young Australian’s of the Year in 2016. The idea started off simple with two washing machines and two dryers in a van washing and drying clothes for those in need for free. Thanks to generous donations from the public and sponsorship from a number of businesses, the team at Orange Sky have been able to expand their services and expand around Australia. Most recently the team have partnered with Epic Hair Designs to create Orange Sky Cuts, a free service that provides haircuts for the disadvantaged in Brisbane.
Every second Friday our amazing team of hairdressers will be on Ivory Street and Harrison Lane in Fortitude Valley from 7.00am – 8.30am. Orange Sky seeks to assist homeless people while creating a platform for conversations, volunteering and opportunities. In conjunction with Orange Sky Cuts, the team also run laundry and shower services to those in need all around Australia.
