How to Embrace your Grey Hair

Featured Hair Trends
Sep 9, 2022

Embracing the aging process isn’t always easy (hello, existential crisis) but one of the best things to look forward to is the multitude of grey and silver hairstyles you can choose from. Switching from long hair to short used to be the rite of passage as you age, and grey hair becomes trickier to conceal. However, grey hair has well and truly shaken off the stigma attached to it as we adopt new hairstyles to celebrate it.

Today you will find 2.75 million posts using the hashtag #greyhair on Instagram, and 2.71 million #silverhair posts. You see, the truth is women of all ages are now embracing the grey hair colour that people used to fight so long to hide. After all, resisting your grey hair can be as futile, expensive and time consuming as trying to find an actual fountain of youth.

Whether your hair is salt and pepper, silvery blonde or oyster grey; it’s the way you style it that matters. Let’s take a look at some of the best grey hairstyles for every length and hair type.

  1. The Vogue Volume

An advocate for a grey mane, British Vogue editor Sarah Harris makes a strong case for embracing grey. With long locks and healthy volume, we are convinced that the more silver hair, the better. The effect of sporting waist-long silver tresses is immensely chic but can be hard to maintain. Thankfully, Oribe has released an illuminating Silverati range to help reveal softer, brighter and perpetually vibrant silver strands.

  1. Herringbone Highlights

Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jennifer Aniston are leading the way when it comes to incorporating grey into your hair. However, they haven’t gone fully grey. They are instead easing into it by blending their roots into the shades we know them best for. The coolest part about this trend is that it doesn’t try to hide greys; it actually spotlights them using a herringbone pattern of highlighting. To get the look, ask your colourist to blend your grey hair into your highlight pattern!

  1. Silver vixen Pixie

Texture and volume are great ways to give life to grey hair. A pixie cut is always a go-to flattering hair cut for those with grey hair. The shorter length around the ears will help combat dry texture that can naturally come with going grey. This short pixie crop will make fine grey hair look fuller, healthier and more youthful. Plus, a combination of grey hair with a pixie crop is not only low maintenance but sophisticated too.

  1. Grombré

The grey ombre hair trend has recently been blowing up on Instagram, and we can totally see why! We love the idea of colouring your roots a deep grey and gently transitioning it to a softer light grey towards the ends. The look is equal parts edgy and glamorous – perfect for literally every skin tone and hair texture. However, if your hair is naturally dark, this look will be easier to achieve. If your hair is naturally light, you will have to darken the base to achieve this look. But for the hair of your dreams? Worth it.

  1. Natural Grey Bob

The classic bob is a popular crop for those with grey hair. As hair becomes grey it tends to feel more coarse and dry. Asking your stylist for a haircut that leaves more length on the top and overlays the rest of the hair will allow your style to lay smoothly. Since hair slightly bends beneath the jawline, this haircut allows light to hit and reflect so the overall look becomes naturally more vibrant.

  1. Face Framing Silver Streaks

Kate Moss has effortlessly illustrated that hints of silver can be very flattering. While the rest of her hair was a buttery blonde, she chose to leave some natural grey streaks framing the left side of her face. It’s totally unique, yet it completely works. If you like to dye your hair, but are looking to transition to grey, we suggest asking your stylist for highlights only. This will work gracefully to frame your face while adding a youthful playfulness to your locks.

  1. Ash Blonde

For the lucky blondes, going grey can be an easier and more subtle endeavor. If you’re noticing more and more grey hair appearing, you might want to consider colouring your hair blonde or with blonde highlights. Blonde will blend in better with grey as the crown and roots grow in, lending it dimension.
