For the last six years, Epic Hair Designs has been on a mission to offer free haircuts to those who can’t afford one, helping us connect with Queensland’s homeless community.
The sad reality is that many Australians are struggling to make ends meet. With the rising cost of living, the impacts of Covid, and the rental crisis, people who never expected to struggle are finding themselves in challenging situations. The reality of financial insecurity is being felt across households nationwide.
Many of us are fortunate enough to have a shower, sleep in a warm bed and treat ourselves to a hair appointment when we need one. However, inner Brisbane has over 2,000 homeless people who can’t afford this kind of luxury.
Since November 2016, Epic Hair Designs has been a proud partner of Orange Sky, working closely with the volunteer group to help those less fortunate in our community. Every second Friday, our hair stylists meet with Orange Sky at Ivory Street in Fortitude Valley to provide clean laundry, warm showers, and a haircut. It may sound simple, but these positive interactions make a big impact on a person’s life.
While we may not be able to change people’s circumstances, we can make sure they have access to a welcoming space with a supportive network. After 6 years, we’ve learnt that conversation is what it’s all about. With 16 salons across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the team at Epic Hair Designs knows a thing or two about conversation – and they fit right in at an Orange Sky shift!
Cutting hair is merely a footnote of an Orange Sky shift; the most important aspect is the sense of community. After volunteering with Orange Sky, the team at Epic can see the importance of reconnecting with people and the power of conversation. The brief is simple; enjoy a good chat and a laugh with your community – helping it connect, learn and grow.
