The Secret to Growing Long, Healthy Hair

Remember that time you went to the salon for a spur-of-the moment haircut and then panic-Googled a few days later? You know, that moment when you desperately search “how to grow your hair faster” because you regret chopping off your longer, fuller locks. Well, as we all know, you can’t magically grow your hair overnight, but you can switch up your haircare routine to make healthier hair choices.

The truth is, when it comes to healthy hair, you’re playing the long game (literally). But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the journey while you sit and wait. Improving your hair health and promoting growth requires a multi-factor approach. Follow our tips below to retain healthy, strong hair, reduce overall breakage and promote length.

1. Regular Trims

Yes, we all hate to admit it but going to the salon for regular haircuts every 6-8 weeks is a good place to start – especially if you love to colour or lighten your hair!  But how does cutting your hair shorter make it longer? Well, the answer is simple – split ends should be cut off regularly to prevent them from splitting further up. If they aren’t snipped off then you will be left with fragile and brittle ends; and the only thing growing will be your frustration.

A healthy trim cycle usually starts at every six to eight weeks. But, for those who leave a lot of time between haircuts, we recommend telling your stylist to give your ‘natural layers’ a good trim. Regularly “dusting off” dead ends throughout your natural layers will remove all those brittle bits while maintaining your length.

Consult with one of our Epic stylists next time you’re in the salon, as they love providing clients individual recommendations and can work with you to create a custom care and growth plan, help track your process, and assist in making adjustments. Our Maintenance Membership Program is perfect for those who want to get regular haircuts – and it’s only $13 a week!

Make sure you are going to the salon for regular hair cuts and trims!

2. Use Products with Keratin

It’s true that keratin-based products can not only combat dryness, but also strengthen the hair and prevent future breakage as Keratin is a natural product of your body that makes up your hair, skin, and nails. Our products are made to revitalise your hair with essential oils and nutrients, ensuring it thrives in an ideal environment for healthy hair.

If your strands are looking frazzled, try Goldwell Kerasilk Control Smoothing Fluid. It’s related to the best Keratin Shampoo and Conditioners in Australia. Trust us, we are obsessed with this entire range. By focusing on areas of the hair that are dry and brittle, this Keratin-packed treatment is laced with liquid silk and increases the softness of your hair without chemicals and without breaking the bank.

3. You Are What You Eat!

There are a handful of factors that contribute to hair growth (think: diet, stress, and hormones) and if you truly want to change the quality of your locks, it’s not enough to treat your hair from the outside. For this reason, eating your way to longer hair is actually a smart and nutritionist-approved way to grow your hair. Vitamins and nutrients that occur naturally in foods are an easy source your body can utilise – just the way mother nature intended.

A handful of healthy fats like omega-3s can help boost hair growth and nourish hair follicles, making your strands strong and shiny. Some great food sources for omega-3 are salmon, tuna, flaxseed, walnuts, and plant oils like soybean and canola oil.

As we mentioned earlier, Keratin is a type of structural protein found in your hair to maintain its strength – therefore eating more protein will promote hair strength. Eggs are a great source of biotin, which is an essential nutrient in keratin synthesis.

Eat food with healthy fats like omega-3s. This will help boost hair growth and nourish hair follicles. Salmon is perfect!

4. Massage your Scalp with Hair Growth Serums

You never need an excuse to get a head massage, but the fact that massaging your scalp increases blood circulation is a pretty good excuse. When you give your scalp some love, you’re actually ensuring that blood and nutrients can easily flow to the hair follicle, which then helps minimise shedding and loss. Introducing proper scalp care into your hair care routine will impact the rate of hair growth and the health of your hair fiber.

Want hair like Blake Lively? Try pairing your scalp massage with a soothing hair growth serum. The Kérastase Résistance Extentioniste Hair Serum is a must for hair that has been affected by heat and colour damage. The energising leave-in serum will stimulate and protect your scalp, while rebuilding and restoring the hair fibre. You can pick one up the next time you’re at Epic!

5. Reduce Damage from Lightening Treatments

Any hairstylist will tell you the most obvious way to help your hair grow faster is by protecting it from chemicals. When you lighten your hair, it damages the hair strands, making it more likely to break off or split. The best way to protect your hair from this is by asking your stylist to add our Olaplex treatment when they lighten your hair. Plus, use our Olaplex at-home range to help your hair recover from the lightening process.

As one of the most well-known brands for hair restoration, Olaplex works to minimise damage and repairs your hair during the colouring/lightening service. Olaplex No1 Bond Multiplier can be added to your lightener, allowing your hair to be lifted higher without serious damage. The treatment reconstructs the previously broken bonds within the hair strand, enabling a longer and healthier mane. We have No1 through to No8 – Ask your stylist at your next visit about our Olaplex range!

6. Have the Right Tools

Unsurprisingly, the tools you choose also makes a difference. If you tend to haphazardly ambush your hair with a brush, then you might want to try this next tip. When it comes to brushing your hair, think slow and steady. Commit to a wide-toothed comb, a detangling brush, or a paddle brush with rounded bristles when combing through your knots. We recommend the Varis Paddle Brush, which quickly detangles wet and dry hair while building body for smooth styling.

Taking the time to properly blow dry your hair will also make a huge difference in your hair’s overall health. Aggressive blow dryers can break your hair strands, so we recommend trying GHD’s Helios Dryer – best for power and control with 30% more shine on your locks. Plus, all GHD products are $60 off in salon right now!

Brush your hair regularly with the right products and tools!
