We all love a good hair day, but sometimes the weather in Queensland refuses to cooperate. Our Epic stylists know firsthand that rain and humidity can wreak havoc on perfectly styled hair, but you’re not completely defenseless against mother nature. It goes without saying to pack your umbrella when wet weather is on the radar, but if you’re caught short, these rainproof hacks will help you survive a storm frizz-free.
1. Start in the Shower
Wet weather on the forecast? Wage the war against the “used mop” look with a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for frizz. Eliminating frizz in the shower means you can save time trying to control it and avoid using heat, which helps retain moisture and keep hair healthier.
Our darling of the moment? The Kérastase Discipline Bain Deluxe Gentle Shampoo and Conditioner. Discipline your unruly mane with this sulfate-free combo designed to smooth frizzy hair, leaving it soft and healthy. The range includes anti-frizz protection and enhances the fluidity and natural movement of your hair with greater manageability.
2. Go from Wet to Dry Asap
When you get caught with wet hair, anything you can do to speed up the drying time will help reduce frizzing. Our stylists suggest blow-drying as soon as possible; the quicker it goes from wet to dry, the easier it is to control frizz as the high-power air flow helps smooth your cuticles. When using a hairdryer, try using a narrow attachment or nozzle to help direct the heat onto the hair in a downward motion, sealing and smoothing the hair cuticle as it dries.
We love ghd’s helios hairdryer because it has been engineered to streamline airflow with a contoured precision nozzle for a more powerful yet precise performance. The bespoke technology makes it a hero product for better styling control, no matter the weather.
3. Keep your Hair Moisturised
If you really want to combat your frizz, then you will need to keep your strands moisturised before going outside. Why? Our stylists explain that dry hair is more prone to the effects of frizz because your locks are looking for moisture in the air. If you have dry hair and struggle to revive lackluster locks when it’s wet outside, we recommend adding a moisturising cream into your routine.
Our favourite? Oribe’s Supershine Moisturising Cream which is a leave-in conditioner formulated with ginger root and amber to soften and strengthen hair from root to tip. And the results? Frizz will be banished; hair is restored and glossier than ever while your strands are left baby-soft. An ideal product to quench that parched hair.
We also love to use Goldwell’s Dualsenses Just Smooth 6 Effects Serum. Like the name suggests, it’s a multi-benefit serum that instantly provides 6 smoothing effects: anti-frizz, humidity control, taming, manageability, smoothening, and natural shine.
4. Anti-humidity Spray
The trick for dealing with humidity is to get the outermost layer of the hair to lay as flat as possible. So, before leaving the house, spray your finished style with an anti-humidity spray to help shield hair from water droplets and moisture. These products usually contain anti-humectants, that essentially act as moisture blockers to prevent the hair from trying to absorb moisture from the environment.
The Stylesign Diamond Gloss is an ultra-fine spray designed to soothe and smooth stressed or agitated hair. The product is the perfect guardian for a natural looking, super straight style.
We are also super obsessed with KMS anti-humidity as it’s basically an umbrella for your hair. In fact, it shields your locks from humidity and frizz for up to 72 hours! All you have to do is spray it 10-12 inches from your head as a final invisible veil after styling.
5. Rock the look!
If all else fails, just go with it! We’ve learnt one major lesson when it comes to wet weather, and that is your hairstyle should be an amped-up version of your natural hair texture. Put your hair into an effortless up-do and rock the gym-chic look. Otherwise, braiding is one of the easiest ways to keep frizzy hair under control. Plus, it’s a styling method that holds better in rainy wind than most other types of looks.
Mastering one or two of these styles will prepare you for when the weather turns. And remember, bobby pins are your friend. Use these to hold your hair in place and add a little spice to your rainy-day look. Our stylists note that people with tight curls or wavy texture are unfortunately more frizz-prone, so choosing a rain-friendly style is your best bet.
6. Use the Right Brush
Don’t brush out any natural wave formations that set in your hair after it gets wet. If your hair has dried with a kink or curl, then disturbing it will cause unruliness. To detangle, finger-comb the lengths or use a wet-to-dry styling brush.
This is where we introduce you to the Superbrush by Janeke. This cult favourite brush effortlessly detangles, speeds up blow drying, protects hair from damage and makes it easy to create bouncy volume at home. It’s perfect for a lot of things, but especially for detangling wet hair without snagging, pulling or breaking. This brush is a popular product at the Epic salons – ask your stylist about it today!
7. Consider a Keratin Treatment
Still struggling with frizzy, unruly or unmanageable hair? In the pursuit of smoother and more manageable hair we have the final answer. Our ever-popular Keratin Smoothing Treatment provides a long-term solution for those struggling with hair that’s difficult to style on rainy days. Made famous for its softening, bond repairing, and anti-frizz results, the treatment can last up to 6 months and can truly streamline your daily routine.
This in-salon treatment uses Kerashape Technology that contains smoothing ingredients such as keratin and silk proteins to create new keratin bonds. By sealing the hair cuticle with coating protein, the treatment eliminates frizz, while enhancing softness and shine. This results in more manageable, humidity resistant hair.
