Our Story – Epic Hair Designs

2002  The Start of our Journey

Epic Hair Designs first opened as Kasam Hair Designs in 2002 in Kenmore and quickly became the suburb’s leading salon. Karen Winter, who is still working with us as Manager, started in 2002

when the salon first opened. From the beginning, the Kenmore salon included a beauty salon called The Skin Co, owned by Kirsten Woodrow. This continues to this day.

Kasam Hair Designs changed hands to the current owner, Brendon Mann, in April 2008. Brendon saw huge potential for a salon business that could offer expertly trained hairdressers at a reasonable price. His vision was to create a salon that was way more than just a hairdressing salon – it was to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience for every client.

Brendon’s plans to achieve this included offering extra services such as complimentary wine and beer, as well as gourmet hot drinks that clients could choose from a menu, WiFi and iPads to use plus top-shelf magazines that were current. In other words, each of our clients was to have an ‘epic’ experience while receiving premium hair design services.

2010  Opening of Our Newmarket Salon

It was only natural then for Brendon to change the salon name to Epic Hair Designs. Before long another Epic Hair Designs was launched in Newmarket at the Readings

Shopping Centre. Newmarket got a facelift and we put new hairdressers in straight away while also keeping on one of the staff, Maddy, who is now the Manager at our Mt Gravatt salon. One thing Epic Hair Designs prides itself on is staff retention. We work to create a great working and learning environment that is rewarding for the whole team. We are all focused on being great at what we do, no matter what it is, from hair to serving our clients.

At the same time as purchasing our Newmarket salon, we then went on the hunt for a world-leading colour company. We found Goldwell, who not only have what we believe to be the best colour but also offer the best training for our hairdressers. We are now very proud to say we have been with Goldwell for five years and know their products inside out. Did you know Goldwell has the lowest amount of ammonia in their products than any other colour company? That is why it is so conditioning and feels great in the hair.

2013 Opening of Springfield Lakes and Mount Gravatt

In February 2013 we added another salon to our group when Company One Hair Designs in Springfield Lakes morphed into Epic Hair Designs. This salon became popular very quickly as Springfield was in need of a premium salon. Our offering of great in-salon services and great colour saw this salon grow faster than any of our other salons.

In the same year, we opened our Mt Gravatt salon, formally a Bossy Hair salon, in The Village on Logan Road. This salon is a lot smaller than our others as it doesn’t have a

back room. However, it is very wide, giving it a big frontage and heaps of room for some amazing signage. And the location is very central.

2014  Taking Hairdressing to New Heights

2014 was a year where we celebrated quite a few new ventures and achievements. First, we started an amazing partnership with the Laboite Theater, Australia’s oldest continuously running theatre company. We now do the hair for five of their main productions every year, which this year included Medea and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. If you haven’t seen one of their productions we suggest you do so as they are just marvelous!

Then Madison, our hairdresser based in our Mount Gravatt salon, become our first ever entrant in Goldwell’s Colour Zoom Challenge, an international live competition. We were very proud of her achievement.

This spurred us on to start our program to have all our hairdressers trained up to a Master Colourist Level. Master Colourist is a set of courses that extend a hairdresser’s knowledge on colour formulation. We certainly stand by our moto “WE DO GREAT COLOUR”. We also started our hairdressers’ training on KMS IQ cutting techniques. We are very passionate about being great at what we do. Training is at the core of every great hairdresser, and that is why we do so much of it.

2014 continued being a big year for us making the top 10 hairdressers in Brisbane as voted by the Urban List.

2015   Salon Number Five

In 2015 we opened our fifth salon at Norman Park. This was another first for us in that the salon is not in a shopping complex but in a house on a street corner. It turns out this gives it an extra special boutique feel. This salon looks particularly amazing inside and out with its polished wooden floorboards and beautiful chandeliers throughout. It definitely has a warm, luxurious ambiance. A separate shampoo room is appreciated by both clients and the staff, as well as the shampoo massage chairs!

Creativity was the theme in August 2015 when we started our first Creative team within our salons. This is a team of six of our hairdressers who will create new styles for the season and do a photo shoot to showcase the looks. We will be presenting our own collection every season and will use it for a lot of our advertising.

Now having 30 staff, with our creative, friendly and entrepreneurial owner, Brendon at the helm, an amazing team of apprentices, and very loyal and amazing clients, Epic Hair Designs looks forward to what the future has in stall for us. More training, more creative ideas and more drive to work towards our goal of being Brisbane’s leading salon group.
